Apolipoprotien B (APOB or ApoB) is the primary apolipoprotein of low density lipoproteins (LDL or “bad cholesterol.”) It also found in VLDL (Very Low Density Lipoproteins) and Chylomicrons. It exists in 2 isoforms, APOB48 and APOB100. APOB100 plays an important role in transporting cholesterol from liver and intestine to other tissues and high level of Apo B in serum is an indicator of vascular and heart diseases.
Apo B Clinical Significance:
Apo B levels are used, along with other lipid tests, to help determine an individual's risk of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD). The test is not used as a general population screen but may be ordered if a person has a family history of heart disease and/or hyperlipidemia. It may be performed, along with other tests, to help diagnose the cause of hyperlipidemia, especially when someone has elevated triglyceride levels, which can prevent accurate LDL cholesterol calculations.
